'Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be
useful or believe to be beautiful’  -  William Morris

The Cotswolds region is famous for it's Arts, Crafts and Antiques not least due to the historical connections with the Arts and Crafts movement and people such as William Morris.

The famous artists colony in the village of Broadway which included well known painters such as John Singer Sargent and Francis Millet all go to add to the rich inheritence of the area as a destination point for seeking the products of skill, workmanship and creativity in its many forms.

Many parts of the Cotswolds has built up the reputation for producing and retailing Arts, Crafts and Antiques. The Stroud area has become a centre for artists, writers, poets and craftspeople. Perhaps it's the long history of artists settling and working in the surrounding Stroud villages - the Gimsons and Barnsleys in Sapperton, the Powells, Simmonds and Rothensteins in Oakridge, and many others - all of which created a critical mass of interest throughout the twentieth century.

Stow-on-the-Wold has become a centre of fine antiques shops particularly for furniture. The village of Broadway for its Art Galleries and fine paintings and the ancient market town of Chipping Campden, with its fine Cotswolds buildings such as William Grevel's house built in 1380, still has silver smith craftsmen working in the old Guild of Handicrafts building founded by C.R.Ashbee on Sheep Street.

PETER HODGE, COTSWOLD ARTIST

For more than thirty years Peter Hodge has pursued a career as a professional artist.  During this period establishing a reputation as a leading Cotswold water colourist, focussing his gaze on the subtle and sometimes dramatic moods and nuances of the Cotswold landscape with the minutia of village life and the farming communities much to the fore.

In recent years he has embarked upon a series of new ventures and is currently passing on his carefully Peter Hodge Fine Art Artisthoned skills in a programme of art tutorials and workshops. These take place in towns and villages of the areas that often feature in his paintings.

Now, what maybe his greatest challenge is nearing completion, with a book of his paintings of The Cotswolds and Vale of Evesham, accompanied by his own anecdotes, musings and observations awaiting a launch in October.

The Book with the working title “ Peter Hodge’s Cotswolds and Beyond”, has a foreword by Evesham’s own celebrity and champion of the environment, Alistair Mc Gowan who writes;  “ the works in this collection not only remind me what a beautiful, natural and quintessentially English area the Cotswolds is, it also reminds me what a sensitive and wonderfully talented artist Peter Hodge is…. It is like being there without being there: a perfect substitute.”

The work has been commissioned by leading Fine Art Publishers,  Halsgrove, who, due to the high production costs for this type of quality publication, need some guarantee of sales and /or sponsorship for the project to progress.

Peter is therefore keen to hear from any businesses or entrepreneurs who may be interested in investing in what will be a prestigious and widely circulated product. In return they could expect to receive discreet advertising in both the book and the full- colour flyers pre-empting the book launch, which will be promoted through book signings, exhibitions and press coverage both local and nationally.

Should any altruistic business, or kind entrepreneur be interested in being involved in Peter’s book project he will be delighted to hear from them on 013866 442841 or E-mail; prhlandscape@tiscali.couk.
