Interesting Fact

Before the Corn Exchange was built business was conducted in the street. Merchants completed money transactions on four flat-topped bronze pillars called 'nails'. These still stand in Corn Street, the oldest of which is 16th century.

This is the origin of the saying - 'paying on the nail '.
