Stratford Armouries (2 miles from the town centre) is the brainchild of James Wigington and Jayne Meehan.
Born from James’s extensive experience in the field of antique arms and armour, the complex is set in 86 acres of rolling Warwickshire countryside adjoining the former World War Two RAF training base at Snitterfield Airfield, now a glider club.
The Wigington family have resided in the area for more than 250 years and have always been a family of keen collectors and artists. James Father, the late John Wigington, once had an arms and armour shop in Henley Street, Stratford-Upon-Avon town centre, whereas his late, half brother, Robin Wigington, was an collector and leading authority on the art and weaponry of Tipu Sultan.
Stratford Armouries is a family oriented attraction. We have been sponsored by Defra and the European Union and offer a wide range of on-site attractions including a broad collection of antique arms and armour from many different centuries and cultures.
Upon entering the Armouries you and your family will be amazed at Leonardo-da-Vinci’s giant crossbow and Bodacae’s Roman warriors on horseback.
Equally magnificent is the life-size armoured Indian elephant, a key exhibit created by world leading armourer Terry English. Terry has worked on many Hollywood and British film sets including Harry Potter, Gladiator, Batman and Robin and Joan of Arc.
In addition to the wonderful museum, Stratford Armouries offers facilities, activities and events that the whole family will enjoy, including a beautifully decorated and spacious restaurant, outside decking area for summer al fresco dining, children’s indoor soft play centre as well as an external adventure playground, a wildflower walk and lots of space!
