NEWS 29 MARCH 2012
Prices in hotels in David Cameron's constituency of Witney saw the biggest rise in the UK last year, figures have shown.
Average one-night room rates in Witney in Oxfordshire were £83 in 2011 - a 31% increase on the 2010 figure, according to a price index from Hotels.com.
There were also big rises in other Cotswold areas, with rates increasing 21% in Broadway in Worcestershire, by 16% in Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire and by 12% in Cheltenham in Gloucestershire.
Broadway, at £132, had the most expensive hotels in England last year, with the UK list being headed by St Andrews in Scotland where the average room rate in 2011 was £143.
Other big rises last year compared with 2010 were at hotels in Watford in Hertfordshire (up 22%), Weston-super-Mare in Somerset (up 21%) and High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire (up 19%).
London rates last year rose 1% to £115, with Edinburgh rates falling 4% to £96, Cardiff staying the same at £74 and Belfast dipping 5% to £65.
Of the towns and cities surveyed, Stevenage in Hertfordshire had the lowest average rates last year, at just £53 per night.
Overall, rates in the UK fell from £83 in 2010 to £82 last year.
Hotels.com said the rise in Witney prices was partly due to the increased profile of the Cotswolds in general, generated by high-profile events, such as the filming of TV series Downton Abbey, the weddings of Kate Moss and Lily Allen, as well as interest in the "Chipping Norton set" of celebrities, including Mr Cameron, Jeremy Clarkson, actress Amanda Holden and rock-star-turned-cheesemaker Alex James.
Hotels.com chief marketing officer Nigel Pocklington said: "With its beautiful scenery and high-end hotels, the Cotswolds is always popular but we also believe there has been heightened interest in the area as a result of its celebrity residents."

THE ROLE OF THE SEARCH ENGINES IN TRAVEL PURCHASES
Users Make 12 Travel Searches Before Purchase
Twenty million people in the UK used search engines for travel information in the first quarter of 2007, according to a new study from Google U.K. and comScore.
Users on average make 12 travel related searches, visit 22 Web sites and take 29 days from the first time they search until they make a purchase. Forty-five percent of transactions happen four weeks or more after the first search. Time spent online is lengthy allowing advertisers to reach and influence users as they search for information.
On average users visit a site they will make a purchase from 2.5 times. Only 10 percent of transactions take place on the first search referral to a given site, and 38 percent of transactions happen at four weeks or more after the first visit.
Fifty-four percent of users started the shopping process with a generic product or destination search term, and 10 percent did not use branded search terms at all. More than a third of travel buyers use a generic term as the last search before they purchase.
Users change the type of keywords they use as they progress in the purchase process. Twenty-nine percent start with a non-branded search term but end with a brand search term.
Google U.K.'s Robin Frewer, Industry Leader, Travel said, "This research proves travel searchers are becoming more brand fickle - spending a large amount of time researching their desired purchase, and considering offers from competing brands."
"The fact that users are using more generic search queries gives ample opportunity for brands to attract new customers - and brands that are not present during these searches are missing out on sales."

History of Cotswolds.Info
The web site was started in March 2002 stimulated by the fact that none of the official
tourist bodies promoted the entire Cotswolds region and also, in your webmasters humble
opinion, neither did existing web sites do the job professionally. It was also a stroke
of luck that we were able to acquire the highly generic new domain name 'cotswolds.info'.
The web site now gets an average of 6500 visitors per day, is top ranked
for the search term 'cotswolds' with Google, Yahoo, and MSN (Bing) and has been
featured on BBC Radio 4 and Japanese Television.
We now have over 900 advertisers spread out over the whole of the Cotswolds region and
beyond.
