It was in 1972 that a group of local people with the help of the local Member of Parliament formed the Bristol Suburban Railway Society. It was with the aim of providing a commuter and weekend steam service.
In 1979 it became the Bitton Railway Co. Ltd and is now known as the Avon Valley Railway.
The Avon valley Railway offers a six mile return journey along the former Mangotsfield to Bath Green Park branch of the old Midland Railway it gives visitors the chance to see aspects of the River Avon that cars cannot reach.
Based at Bitton Station it is mid-way between Bristol and Bath and signed off the A431, once a Midland Railway Station it has been extensively and painstakingly restored from a state of dereliction.
There are refreshments and toilet facilities, a railway shop a pleasant garden and provision of outdoor seating.
It is possible to arrange to have a meal on one of the Luncheon Dining Trains.
There are many other events during the course of the year one of which is a Murder Mystery.
